CHILDREN'S LITERATURE (UNM San Juan Center)

WELCOME, SPRING 2009 Students!

Dear Children's Literature Students,

Welcome to our Spring 2009 semester. You are in for a fun adventure as we immerse ourselves in: reading lots of children's literature; talking about literature; working with Tibbetts Middle School students in a Poetry Slam practicum; performing creative drama; writing our own poetry; researching literature genres and literary elements.

Thank you for your understanding with my creative friend Maxime, the French Chef. I have to remember he means well and he is passionate about anything he undertakes. Maxime wanted me to ask you your thoughts about his visit to our children's literature class today. Please post your comments below so he can stop pestering me.

To post your comments, just click on the words "Post Comment" below, enter your comments and click send. Your message will be uploaded so that you will be able to read your message and other response postings.

Thank you, Frances & Maxime!

Maxime!  Your tea was absolutely superb!  I'm sorry I spilled the first cup that you prepared for me.  I hope it wasn't too expensive to make.

You showed me that passion, excitement, and play are all elements that are in short supply in our classrooms.  It was fun to spend a little time with your energetic craziness.  I'm just sorry that Francis had to spend all of that time locked in the dark closet.

I think your visit has opened my eyes to possibly being as crazy and energetic as you were...as if that were possible...in my future classrooms.

Maxime came in and we helped her, I mean him, create peanut recipes for his upcoming Bad Ass(ett) Texas Peanut Contest.

Oh Frances there is never a dull moment in your class!

Maxime showed me how much energy I would love to have in my own classroom (or at least half the energy that was shown). I saw how much fun you can have, even in a college class, yet still learn and accomplish things while having fun!

I hope Maxime does amazing at the cook off!

Ah Maxime, what can I say.  Your presence brought a smile to my face.  Watching the faces of the other classmates as you made them tea and asked them to describe it was priceless.  You did an excellent job at keeping your composure.  I think Frances was alright with being locked in the closet.  She didn't complain that much about it.  I enjoyed coming up with a peanut recipe for your Texas kick ass competition.  The best of luck to you and I hope to see you again sometime.

francine/maxime was at first awkward but i just decided to go with it. I have never been around an instructor who would role play on the first day of class.  The rest of the semester seems interesting and I hope to take what I learn back to my community.

I have known other students that have taken this course in the past.  They informed me that it was creative and interesting, although I was unprepared for Maxime!  It was difficult for me to get into role-playing along with Maxime at first, although it became fun and interesting.  I don't know if I will be able to stay in character as well as her when it is time to play the characters we created.

I have posted twice now, but cannot find my entries, so here it goes again. I thoroughly enjoyed Maxime and his tea. He was cleaver and innovative, and rolled with the flow like all of us need to do, especially as up and coming teachers. Thank you Maxime for showing us the lighter side of education and Literacy.

Well, sorry I am a little bit late with this posting. On April 20th the class met for our second to last session.  We discussed literary elements and then taught our students. Afterward, we discussed a hero's journey and the call to adventure.  We will meet with our students one last time on the 27th to finish up the poetry units.
